Mastermind Tap Tempo

On the HRI forum, you mentioned that you can use a momentary footswitch as a tap tempo button as long as you modify the cable. I did reply there, but I'll ask the same thing here:

Could you not do it the other way around, make a cable with a TRS with the 100k resistor at the Mastermind end, and wire that to a TS jack at the footswitch end?

it would be possible to modify the Mastermind to accept a standard momentary pedal, but the changes will be somewhat involved - there would need to be several traces cut and rerouted on the PCB. If you're feeling adventurous, I can work out the details and let you know...

Urg, no, modifying the Mastermind was not at all in my thoughts. That's sacrilege! I was actually thinking more along the lines of creating a custom cable with a TRS jack at the Mastermind end (with the resistor wired internally in the jack plug) and a TS jack at the pedal end, wired tip-tip, ring-sleeve. I've done similar things when building DMX terminators. Seems a much simpler approach than modifying hardware at either end.

Actually, yes, that should work. The connections should be as follows:

Code:
Mastermind end Pedal end
tip tip
ring sleeve

Then add the 100k resistor between the ring and sleeve on the Mastermind end.

Thanks for the good idea. I'll create a diagram for that cable.

You're welcome :) I've got a friend looking out a 100k resistor for me today, so I should be able to build a cable in the next day or two. I'll let you know how I get on!

Well, I've built the cable... couldn't find a spare r/a TRS Neutrik jack in the end so had to put a straight one on, but other than that it was a painless operation. Not had chance to test it yet as I've left my FS5U somewhere... think it might be at church. I'll have a hunt and report further :)

A follow-up from this really - I built the cable, which was fine, and when I brought my FS5U home I plugged it in and tested it. It works fine, but it seems to be double-tapping when trying to use it for tap tempo with my G Major. What I mean by this is that it's triggering both when I press the pedal and when I release it. This is the same problem I had when using my Rocktron All Access with an IA switch for tap tempo, so I don't think it's particularly related to the Mastermind, but I wonder if there's a way around it. Any ideas?

OK, I continued looking into this, and found it's actually an issue with the TC G-Majors - you have to use a latching footswitch (like the Boss FS5L) for tap tempo, not a momentary one as logic would dictate.
