William's Axe-FX III Rack Rig

Hello all,

New to the RJM forum. Looking forward to talking with everyone here. Here's my guitar rig...

GUITARS:
-Ibanez S521 MOL "Vanessa II" - Successor to the late Fender Jaguar HH that I used to have back in my high school years, this guitar has a long history of having served me well back in my university years. Since then it has undergone a variety of modifications - Grover locking tuners, Graphtech String Saver Saddles, Seymour Duncan JB TB-4 and Pearly Gates pickups, and the tone knob replaced by a killswitch.
-Ibanez RG652FX "SparklEagle" - My very first Prestige model (and my second Made in Japan guitar in possession to this day) that I saved up for back in my university years by teaching guitar lessons. It has undergone an HSH conversion by the luthiers at The Twelfth Fret in Toronto, and has been modded with Seymour Duncan pickups - JB TB-4 in the bridge, SSL-1 in the middle, and Pearly Gates in the neck. To accommodate the HSH conversion, the stock 5-way switch has been replaced by a 5-way superswitch. This guitar also has its tone knob removed and replaced by a killswitch.
-Yamaha NTX-1 - A new, recent addition to the family. I wanted to have a nylon-string guitar as a gift to myself for surviving a terrible year filled with depression and struggles.

All of my guitars are tuned to Eb Standard (half-step down, what some would refer to as the "baroque" tuning). My Ibanez electric's sometimes go down to Drop C#, and I have plans to write original repertoire in C#G#C#F#G#C# tuning as well. My Ibanez electric's use Schaller strap locks (SparklEagle uses the more modern S-Locks), as well as D'addario NYXL 10-52 strings. My nylon-string Yamaha uses D'addario Heavy Tension strings to accommodate the Eb Standard tuning.

SIGNAL FLOW:
Both my Ibanez electrics use Shure QLXD H50 wireless bodypacks (cable is used in the studio). My nylon-string Yamaha uses cable to go direct into Input 2 of my Axe-FX III Turbo.

Shure QLXD H50 Receiver then goes into the Suhr Buffer. Iso out goes to my Boss TU-3S tuner on my pedalboard. (Nylon-string guitar doesn't really have a choice in the matter as I have to use the Axe-FX's own tuner for that, but for the electric guitars, I still prefer a more immediate response coming from my Boss tuner as I find it to be more accurate than the Axe-FX's tuner.)

Regular out of the Suhr Buffer goes into the Digitech Drop, which I use only for fill-in gigs where I have to fill in for guitarists of other bands that tune below Eb Standard/Drop C#. Out of the Digitech Drop goes into my Voodoo Lab HEX.

I'm only using loops 2 and 3 of my Voodoo Lab HEX for my two octaver pedals - Boss OC-5 (for octave down + dry) and EHX Pico POG (for octave up + dry, to simulate a 12-string guitar). Out of the Voodoo Lab HEX hits the rear input 1 of the Axe-FX III Turbo.

All of my compression, drives, amp/cab modelling, stereo chorus, delay, spring/plate/shimmer reverb are done by the Axe-FX III.

I am also using I/O 4 of the Axe-FX III for my outboard Strymon BigSky, which is routed in parallel in the Axe-FX III signal flow. I have killdry on for the BigSky, which I use for hall and cloud reverbs only. This is to ensure I'm not overloading the Axe-FX III's CPU limits in order to achieve true delay/reverb spillover with scene changes.

For those of you wondering, my main amp tones are as follows:
-Clean tone: Fender Deluxe Reverb Normal
-Mid-gain (blues voicing): Friedman BE V3
-Mid-gain (J-Rock voicing): FAS Crunch
-Mid-gain (slap/thump guitar voicing): Marshall AFD100
-Metal high-gain: Friedman HBE V3

Cab IR I'm using as of now is the OwnHammer Marshall V30 cab IR. I've tested a couple IR's from ML Sound Labs and York Audio, and the OwnHammer Marshall V30 won it for me out of the bunch as it's the most balanced-sounding to my ears.

Outputs 1 to 3 of my Axe-FX III are dictated as follows:
-Output 1: DI to FOH
-Output 2: DI to my audio interface for recording, and for the IEM I'm currently saving up for
-Output 3: Power amp + speaker cabs (output 3 does not have a cab IR block)

All of my pedals, with the exception of the Boss TU-3S, are powered by the Strymon Zuma power supply, and for my rack rig I'm using the Furman power conditioner.

For my pedalboard, other than the Boss TU-3S, the only other two items I have are the RJM Mastermind GT-16 (used as my MIDI controller for my rig, AND to power my Boss TU-3S) and Boss FV-500L volume/expression pedal (used as volume and wah for my Axe-FX III). I've decided to connect the expression pedal via a long TRS cable to my Axe-FX III as I find it's the most stable from my experience.

As of now, I'm still experimenting with bi-directional MIDI to see how stable it will get. Once I confirm that bi-directional MIDI will work for me long-term, I plan to phase out the MIDI Solutions QuadraThru from my rig.
