Use of the caret character

Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, my search came up empty. I noticed that the caret (^) character, when used in button labels, causes reverse video of parts of the label, but the behavior is not consistent between different button types - and of course I don't know if creating labels with the caret causes any other changes in the system. What is the purpose of the caret in button labels?

The purpose is to put the following text on the next line and invert that text. It won't work if the button has anything else that wants to use the second line of the display: a hold function, device PC information, etc.
