“Unable to connect to device”

May PBC 6x was working fine and connected to my MacbookPro without any issues, but suddenly it stopped connecting to the editor and I get the error "Unable to Connect to Device" when attempting to connect the RJM editor to my Mac. Editor is version 4.2 and Mastermind is 4.2.3.

I am using Mastermind Editor version 5.1.0.
My PBC has firmware version 5.1.0.

I have tried two different USB cables that had been working flawlessly and now they’re cable work. I have tried all of the USB ports on my computer and nothing works. I have tried shutting off the power to the PBC 6x multiple times. I’ve tried turning my computer off and on several times. Nothing is working.

The problem started when I tried to change banks using my boss FS7 A/B switcher connected to the external switch jack on the PBC 6x. It had been working fine but for some reason when I pressed the bank up button on the boss FS7, the PBC 6x started scrolling rapidly through all of the presets and would not respond to further presses on the Boss FS7 pedal. At the same time, my Line 6HX stomp XL started doing weird stuff, scrolling through different presets randomly. I had the HX stomp XL connected to the same computer with a separate USB cable at the same time. I have PBC six connected to the HX stomp XL and several other pedals connected via midi.

After rebooting the PBC 6x, the screen initially said “no presets” and none of the buttons worked. I went into the editor on the PBC 6x and selected preset edit, and that reset the device into preset mode again. There after, the PBC 6x functions properly. I am able to send preset changes to the HX stomp. Xl via midi as I change presets on the 6X. The only issue I’m having is that the computer editor will not connect to the PBC 6x.

Have you had any issues with the USB jack going bad on the PBC 6X? Any ideas?

Chris

The FS7 particular issue is probably due to the FS7 not being set to momentary switching. And, for some odd reason, the FS7 needs to be powered with a power supply in order for it to work as a momentary switch.

It seems unlikely that the FS7 issue is related to the USB issue, but I suppose it's possible. Do you have access to another computer you could try the PBC with? And is the PBC running version 4.2.3 or 5.1.0? Your message mentions both.

Thanks for the quick response.
I am using version 5.1.0 on both editor and PBC. Not using 4.2.3 on either. I have the fs7 momentary/latch switch set to momentary and it is powered with a 9V pedal power. I also have the “momentary” box checked in the editor on the buttons page for each external switch where I have programmed each external switch to do bank up bc and bank down.
Will the editor work on a PC or Mac?

Hmm.. The symptoms sure sound like the switch is stuck in the "down" position. What about the polarity setting on the switch? Did you try both settings?

There are editor versions for both PC and Mac.

I’ve had issues with this switch before. It’s finicky. But it was working. Yes I tried the polarity switch both ways.

Interestingly, I installed the Editor version 5.1.0 on my PC and I was able to connect to the PBC 6x. So that would suggest that the USB jack on the PBC 6x is fin and my USB cable is fine. I tried connecting to my Mac again and it would not connect. It’s presumably an issue with my MacBook Pro. Any ideas how to resolve that? I’ve never had issues connecting between my Mac and the PBC 6x before now. Would it help to reload the PBC editor software again?

Make sure the editor version and the firmware version match, at least the first two digits. 5.1.x will only pair with 5.1.x.

Also, another thing to try is to use the Audio MIDI Setup app, which is a built in app on every Mac. Run it, and select Window / Show MIDI Studio. You'll see a bunch of MIDI devices there - every MIDI device you've ever connected to your Mac. Try finding the Mastermind PBC entry/entries and deleting them, then reconnecting the Mastermind. I'm not sure that this will help, but it might.

Also make sure you're using the Mastermind editor and not the Mastermind GT editor.

I used the Audio Midi app and deleted the Mastermind midi file that I found there. That did not help. Still “unable to connect to device.” on my Mac.

I reinstalled the Mastermind editor v 5.1.0 under the PBC6x section of downloads on your website (not the GT editor). My PBC 6x also sees firmware ver 5.1.0. Unfortunately I am still “unable to connect to device on my Mac. PC still connects fine.

This is frustrating.

Here is another copy of my Mastermind Editor file ver 5.1.0

In the editor menu, select Preferences. If the "MM Only" checkboxes are not checked, check them and try again.

If the "MM Only" checkboxes are checked, uncheck them. Then in the dropdowns next to the checkbox, look to see if Mastermind PBC appears in them, and make sure it's selected. See if that helps.
