Best way to use LT/RG with multi amp setup

Hello!

I’m wondering what is the best approach to using my LT/RG combination with a multiple amp setup. By the way, for the time being, I’m using the Amp 1 out on the RG going to a Mesa Road King head(series 1, using din pins 1-4 strictly for channel switching) and Amp 2 out going to the footswitch input of a BE-100 head(only using din pins 5-6 and drain to connector chassis) for switching Clean,BE and Dirty BE channels). These work great. I’m then using the RG’s loops strictly for front end pedals/rack devices.
I’d like to have the first page of the LT display each amp per switch and when I press a switch for a certain amp it would bring me to a new page strictly for channel switching that specific amp along with on/off for fx pedals associated for that amp. Is the logical path going with a Preset page, IA page or some other path? Oh almost forgot, I’ve also got an Ampete 88S-Studio amp/cabinet switcher hooked up to the RG’s midi out which allows me to switch between 8 amps and 8 cabs/reactive loads/attenuator. That’s working great as well!
I look forward to your suggestions on how I should approach this. Thanks!!

I found this old post of mine when I was setting up my multi-amp rig in my home studio which has expanded over those five years. I’m having an issue with consistency when selecting a preset via my LT foot controller which involves selecting an amplifier attached to the Ampete 88S-Studio. Example: I will press a button on the LT MM for say Preset/amp 2 and there will be no selection. The display on the Ampete’s selector will show Error and hitting the footswitch a second time selects the 2nd Footswitch function which works fine. Then pressing the foot switch a third time selects the preset/amp fine with no error displayed. This happens frequently. Now the Ampete 88S and 88R selector are connected directly to the midi out of the Rack Gizmo. Could this be what’s causing this irregular behavior or would the LT be more likely?

Hoping someone has opinions on what’s going and solution. Thanks!!

The Ampete is a little weird when it comes to its handling of MIDI messages. But, as far as I know it does work as advertised when you follow all of its rules.

My best guess is that you have an issue with the Mastermind being configured to send more messages than it should. For example, grouped buttons will send messages for both the button that's being turned on and also the button that's (automatically) being turned off. Turning off Send Off Messages for the group would help with this.

I recommend using a USB MIDI interface on a computer and a MIDI monitor app to see what's being sent by the Mastermind so you can compare what the difference is between a button press that works and a button press that results in an error.

Thanks! I tried turning off Send Off Messages but no change. I’m going try the midi interface/monitor suggestion. Hopefully that sheds some light. Thanks again!

Hi all,

I'm trying to do the exact same thing right now and having the same issue, specifically the first button press when selecting a different amp turns all amps off.

I tried turning off Send Off Messages which did seem to solve the amp selection on first press, but created a new issue the way I have mine set up.

I have each amp and each cab on its own button, but the amps are IA cycle buttons so I can further select the amp channel.

There’s two different issues within this bucket:

- controlling VH4 amp channel with midi and each channel is one of the 4 IA cycle steps. The button only cycles through steps 2-4 but will never select 1st step. When I had Send Off Messages turned on I swear this worked for all 4 steps

- controlling amp channels of Bogner Uber Ultra, Bogner Snorkler, Friedman JEL 50, and Langner DCP (Wilcox version) through the voodoo labs channel switcher.

Each of these amps are set up in the MM on their own button IA cycle with two steps (clean and crunch essentially).

However, the button does not cycle through the steps for any amp. It stays on one step no matter how many times I press the button.

For all these amps, I practically get one less step than I programmed in the IA cycle actions (3/4 for vh4 and 1/2 on the rest)

Do I need to have a first step that is an Off step for each button?

Separately, none of my commands for the voodoo channel switcher are working over MIDI but I haven’t dug into it fully yet. Are there specific settings you are aware of for these amps?

Any and all help appreciated

You always have to have an off step for an IA Cycle button, unless it's a setting that never turns off

If you send me your settings file, I can have a look.

Thanks, I've got the Ampete working great now after adding an off step to the IA cycle for each button.

For the channel switching should I submit a ticket through the website or attach the settings files here?

Ok I just picked up a USB midi interface and will be using a midi monitor app to check what messages are being sent. Prior to starting I began to think if possibly the fact that I have the LT being powered by the Rack Gizmo could have an adverse affect on the random amp/preset selection error issue I’m experiencing. If there’s a possibility it could be this is there a way to verify/eliminate this as possible? Thanks!!

Sure, you could use a 5-pin MIDI cable to connect the LT and Rack Gizmo to disconnect phantom power, then power the LT separately.
