What are the power requirements of the Y-Not?

The Y-Not requires 9 volts DC, with a minimum current supply of 150mA. It uses a standard BOSS-type connector: 5.5mm x 2.1mm x 9.5mm. Polarity is not important.

What's the Y-Not used for?

The Y-Not is an A/B/Y switch - it can switch one audio signal to two outputs. Most often, it would be used to switch between two amps so you can have a clean amp and a dirty amp and switch between them automatically, as if they were two channels of a single amp.

You can also use the Y-Not to switch between the inputs of a multiple input amp, to make it work like a channel switcher.

What's the deal with the new version of the Y-Not?

As of mid-2014, there's a new version of the Y-Not available. This one looks very similar to the old one, but includes a few new features:

  • The YB- mod (programmable phase inversion per preset) is now standard
  • The input jack can be switched from mono to stereo (TRS). In stereo mode, the tip of the input jack is routed to the A output, and the ring of the input jack is routed to the B output. The A and B outputs can still be switched on and off independently. This feature is intended for use with guitars that have magnetic and piezo outputs, so that you can switch between pickups using MIDI.

You can identify the new model by the third button from the left. On the old model. it's labeled "Invert B". On the new model, it's labeled "TRS In".

How do I invert phase on the new Y-Not? I don't see a phase invert button!

The B button now has three settings:

  • When the button is unlit, the B output is off.
  • When the button is red, the B output is on and in phase.
  • When the button is orange, the B output is on and its phase is inverted

Each time you press the button it will switch to the next state. Each preset will remember the on/off state as well as the in/out of phase state.
