Problem using external switch

I bought the American Loopers 2 button external foot switch with LED lights to use with my PBC 6x. I have never been able to get it to work at all. I connected it to the ext switch jack on the PBC 6x with a single TRS cable. I’ve tried several TRS cables. One of the LEDs will light up. The other one won’t. Neither button works to control the PBC 6x. I’ve tried assigning it to do bank up and bank down. I’ve tried using it as an IA to turn loops on and off. Nothing works. Am I missing something in the programming?

It's hard to say without actually seeing what you're trying to do. Can you post your editor file? It's unlikely, but it also might be worth posting a picture of the wiring inside the switch just to verify that they didn't accidentally send you a switch wired up for a different device.

Are you sure you're plugging it into the Ext Sw jack, and not Exp Pedal? The symptoms you're describing sounds like it's plugged into Exp Pedal.

I wish it were that easy. No I definitely have the cable plugged into Ext Sw. it’s right below the Fxn Sw jack. Nothing plugged into Exp Pdl. I also tried 2 different TRS cables and I checked continuity on the tip, ring and sleeve on y cable and got good connections and no shorts.

I took the a/b switcher apart and took some pics which I will attach. All the solder joints looked OK. I’m not sure if the wiring is correct or not. I’ll defer that to you. I did find one of the solder joints on the input jack (i’m not sure if it was the tip, ring, or sleeve ) had a loose strand of wire that could have been touching another wire and grounding, so I pushed it back so it wasn’t sticking out. I don’t know if that helped or not, but where is before only one light came on now both lights come on win a TRS cable is inserted into the input and either button is pushed. The lights go off when the button is pressed the second time. So I had Hope after this improvement.

However, when I plugged the baby switch back into the PBC 6x and pushed the AMB button, nothing happened on the PBC 6x. The blue and red lights on the ABC switcher turn on and off appropriately, but there is no effect from the button on the PBC6x.

Will try to send you my Editor file in another reply.

By the way, I wish you still sold your AB switcher. I would have bought it.

Thanks.

This is my my editor file that I “Exported”. I hope you can view it.

I also attached a few more pics of the switch wiring.

I don’t want to waste too much of your time on this. Can you recommend another ext switch option?

Hmmm, it's hard to tell if the wiring is correct, as he's using a 3PDT switch, where I have always used standard momentary. I typically associate 3PDT switches with latching operation, but there are 3PDT momentary switches out there, so it could be functional. If we can't find anything wrong with the editor file, it might be worth emailing the pictures to them to double check that it's correct. I could ask this though - is there a hard click when you step on it, or is it a soft-step switch?

Re: the editor file, your link didn't work. Try clicking the "Attach files" button and selecting it from the window that pops up.

Is this switch specifically for a Mastermind? It looks more like a standard 2-button switch. It needs to be wired specifically for a Mastermind in order to work properly. The fact that the switches also seem to be standard 3DPT switches also supports the idea that this isn't a Mastermind switch. It does appear that American Loopers does make specific Mastermind switches, though.

It was supposed to be Mastermind specific but I’ve had my doubts. I’ve had it a few years could never get it to work. I have one more Boss a/b switch at home that I will try. Otherwise, I’ll get a new one. Do you have one you recommend for PBC 6x?

If you search reverb.com for "RJM switch" a bunch will come up. I have the profile matching one, and they did a good job with that one. It's 3D printed nylon, but seems pretty darn sturdy.

I can recommend this one (the RJM version):

The ones recommended are both good, and the companies are solid. If you're handy with a drill and soldering iron, you can also build your own. It's a super simple build, and all the supplies you need are maybe $20-25 shipped.

Thanks to everyone for your replies!
Just to update:
The American Loopers switch that I couldn’t get to work had buttons that “clicked” when you pressed them. I bought another American Loopers pedal specific for RJM PBC and the buttons are “clickless”. The new pedal works flawlessly.
