What are you listening to lately?

Hopefully this will stimulate a bit of discussion or at least broaden our listening tastes a bit :) Dunno what we can do about attracting more members, but I guess that'll happen in time.

So, the CDs (or their virtual equivalent) I find myself putting on quite a bit at the moment include:
Karmakanic - Who's The Boss In The Factory (great Swedish prog band led by Jonas Reingold, bassist from the Flower Kings, and with Göran Edman on vocals, who's got a terrific voice)
Steve Lukather - Ever Changing Times - growing on me, this one. Starts particularly strong.
Týr - By The Light Of The Northern Star (progressive Viking metal band from the Faroe Islands. Not sure this album is as strong as Ragnarok but it's still fun to listen to)
Winger - Karma (definite return to form after the somewhat mixed IMO reunion album IV)
Eagles - Long Road Out Of Eden
Vertical Horizon - Burning The Days
Jason Aldean - Wide Open (bit of rocking country!)
Journey - Revelation

And a handful of older albums that I just love:
Spock's Beard - V
Extreme - III Sides To Every Story
Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
Dave Matthews Band - Under The Table And Dreaming
Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

Edit: How could I miss out the beautiful Circus Of Life by Norwegian melodic rock band Magic Pie? Awesome musicians, great sound. Can't wait till album #3 later this year.

I'm in a bit of musical rut lately, so I may have to check some of those bands out...

EDIT: Progressive Viking Metal??? I've definitely got to check that out.

I haven't found any new bands recently, but a couple ones that I've come across in the past few years are:

Porcupine Tree. Easily one of the best bands around IMHO. If you like Floyd, Radiohead and/or Rush, you must check them out. Their most recent album hasn't grown on me as much as the previous ones, but they have quite a few truly great albums. Start with In Absentia or Deadwing if you're new to them.

Tiles: another prog band, this time from Detroit. Definitely Rush influenced. They're not as dark or trippy as some of P.Tree's stuff, more straightforward prog.

And the cool thing about this job is that I get to hear from a lot of bands from around the world. A partial list of customers' albums I've had the opportunity to listen to are:

Dave Weiner (Steve Vai's other guitar player, he has one solo album and another on the way)
Days Before Tomorrow (Melodic prog with some pop catchiness)
Hectic Watermelon (what happens when an ex-Navy SEAL decides to start a fusion band? Listen and find out!)
Friday Nights (Alt rock, kinda reminiscent of STP, but catchier)
Steve Turner (Australian guitar hero)

There are more, but my addled brain can't remember them all right now - I'll add more as I think of them!

I had on a couple of Porcupine Tree CDs the other day - been a while since I'd listened to them. Good stuff, although I do wish Steven Wilson would cheer up a bit - they sound to me like a manic depressive version of Marillion. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing - Steve Rothery is one of my favourite guitarists of all time. I also enjoyed listening to the mellow album (Damnation I think) by Opeth the other day.

Last couple of days, when I've been able to tear myself away from the Olympic hockey games (which I'm probably a couple of days behind with, but enjoying all the same) I've been going back to my roots and listening to Joe Satriani and Andy Timmons.

Yeah, TYR are awesome - bizarre combination of styles with the traditional folk music, metal and progressive influences. They do a fantastic version of the old drinking song The Wild Rover on their 2nd album Eric The Red :D

Ah the good old Porcupine Tree....went to see them a couple of years ago in Manchester UK...what a fantastic gig...recently been hitting the old blooooze stuff, Joe Bonamasa at the Albert Hall DVD is fantastic!...Aynsley Lister is a must to see live...Jim Kirkpatric is another awesome UK blues player.

Regarding Mr Lukather I think Candyman has to be my fave album...Party in Simons Pants....just blows me away!

Ahhh fan of the good old hockey game eh Martin!...I have Sky setup to record Finland v Sweden later ;)

Paul :D

Awesome, I'm hoping I'll be able to find a download source for that game (no TV here). Should be an awesome game - Teemu Selanne is probably my favourite player, but being Swedish by descent I'll be supporting Team Sweden.

I miss seeing regular hockey games - when I lived in Manchester I used to be a season ticket holder for the Manchester Storm. I'm hoping to catch a couple of Ducks games when I'm in Anaheim for NAMM next January :D

I started watching hockey at Altrincham....in the days of the Trafford Metros...which later were the core of the Storm for a short time....I watched the Storm for a couple of seasons on and off...as they often were!

Have just d/l'd some old Ratt albums....I had forgotten what a great foot tapin big hair band they were!!...awesome guitar sound!

:D

Yeah, absolutely. I didn't get into most of the hair bands, but Ratt was cool. Great riffs, and great harmony playing. They were the first band I ever saw live.

Phoenix. I remember getting turned on to these guys 10 years ago. They've been around for a long time, they're a bit older and they're just now blowing up here in the U.S. on the pop charts. Great mix of guitars, electronica, and melodic writing, and they have material for every mood in their back catalog. Nice to see a great, real band that's worked for it get some big mainstream success.
